Institute of Biomaterials and Bioengineering
Starting from 2024 the Institute of General Chemical Engineering (IGCE) will become to Institute of Biomaterials and Bioengineering (IBB). Institute was founded in 2010 by merging the Department of General Chemical Engineering (DGCE) and RTU Rudolfs Cimdins Riga Biomaterials Innovations and Development Centre (RTU RC RBIDC).
More than 60 employees work in the institute and carry out academic and scientific work.
Scientific work
IBB team carries out fundamental and applied studies in various fields of chemical technology and materials science. Institute has modern equipment and we provide also research studies and analysis for manufactures, other research centres and start-ups.
Academic work
The academic staff of the institute consist of scientists and consultants of technological and environmental fields of Latvian industry and they teach and guide students at all levels (Bachelor, Master, PhD) provided by the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology. Some of the academic staff also gives the lectures for other RTU faculties.

The Head of institute, professor Jānis Ločs has received an honorary award “RTU Scientist of the Year”.
Leading researchers Dagnija Loča and Kristīne Šalma-Ancāne and researcher Jana Vecstaudža have received the prestigious L’Oréal award “For Women in Science”.
Professors, leading researchers Jānis Ločs, Dagnija Loča and Kristīne Šalma-Ancāne have been elected as the Full member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.
