RTU Rudolfs Cimdins Riga Biomaterials Innovations and Development Centre (RTU RC RBIDC) is the largest and the most modern centre of biomaterials research in the Baltic States, where “spare parts” are developed to replace the damaged human tissues and organs, such as “artificial bones”.

In the centre scientists synthesize and study new implant materials for medical applications and also develop new eco-materials for environmental solutions.

In RTU RC RBIDC scientific studies are carried out in the fields of biomaterials, involving a multidisciplinary team of researchers. Funding is received and obtained  mainly from international and national projects. Significant number of students are involved in the implementation of the research projects.

Students can work with scientific equipment located in the institute and with the guidance from leading researchers analyze their results. We encourage students to participate in national and international conferences and congresses. The centre takes measures for the commercialization of the developed materials as well.

RTU RC RBIDC was opened on 12^th of December, 2006. Professor, Dr.sc.ing. Rūdolfs Cimdiņš invested a lot of work in establishing the centre, but unfortunately, he passed away just a few days before the official opening of the centre.

The establishment of the centre with the funding from framework of PHARE 2003 was ensured. In year 2006 this funding was used to renovate the building owned by RTU at Pulka Street 3/3 and to purchase modern equipment for the synthesis and analysis of new biomaterials.
