International cooperation in scientific and academic work
The network and areas of cooperation are continuously expanding. IBB employees benefit from the mobility opportunities offered through COST and ERASMUS + programs towards establishing new international contacts that have the great plausibility to realize new cooperations in various international research and capacity building projects.
For further referral, the interview with Dagnija Loča, on the development of new scientific and industrial cooperations in the national and international level as part of the Baltic Biomaterials Centre of Excellence project is offered.
Cooperation with Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) and Professor Vytautas Galvanauskas (Process Control Department) was established, and he undertook the role of the guest lecturer for the study courses ĶVT312 “Computer Modeling of Chemical Processes” and ĶVT416 “Computer Modeling”. In the aforementioned courses, students will have the opportunity to acquire necessary skills in the engineering computer program -MATLAB, which will ameliorate students’ academic profile. Due to the cooperation between the higher education institutions, the exchange visits and professional development of Professor Vytautas Galvanauskas, Assistant Professor Olita Medne and Lecturer Imants Kreicbergs have been ensured, while simultaneously the network of international contacts has been augmented.
Association agreement with Professor Andres Ozols (University of Buenos Aires, Argentina) has been signed in 2011. Professor A.Ozols visits IBB on an annual basis, with the focus on conducting scientific research and delivering guest lectures on the topics regarding latest technologies in the development, studies and applications of biomaterials. Guest lectures are continually attended by the IBB researchers, academic staff and students.
Cooperation in academic and scientific work with the universities from Germany dates back to the late 1990s:
Cooperation with:
- Professor Aldo Boccaccini and his team at the Institute of Biomaterials (Friedrich–Alexander University Erlangen–Nürnberg);
- The team of researchers led by Professor Matthias Epple (Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, University of Duisburg-Essen);
- Professor Barbara Nebe (University of Rostock);
- Professor Jörg Bossert from the University of Jena (Friedrich Schiller University Jena);
- Professor Shahram Ghannati and Professor Charles James Kirkpatrick from Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universitat Frankfurt am Main.
Developed cooperation with these universities have led to granted joint international projects as well as outstanding joint scientific publications. Guest lectures by prominent scholars have been organized in Latvia and in Germany, and furthermore, international mobility of doctoral students and experienced staff has been significantly promoted.
The ERA.NET MATERA SONOSCA project “Sonochemical technology for bioactive bone regeneration scaffold production” (2011 – 2014) has initiated the fruitfull collaboration with the Professor Witold Lojkowski from the Institute of High Pressure Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences (Poland) and Dr. Fernando de la Vega from PARTNER D PV Nano Cell Ltd (Israel).
During the project, the technology for the production of porous implant materials with nano-sized calcium phosphate particles coatings was developed. Project website

In the course of the project, the technology for the production of biodegradable polymer / calcium phosphate composites for orthopedic applications was developed.
The EURONANOMED NANOFOROSTEO project “Multifunctional injectable nano HAp composites for the treatment of osteoporotic bone fractures” (2014-2016) has initiated new collarorative links between RTU RC RBIDC and Dr. Mauro Alini (AO Foundation, AO Research Institute Davos, Switzerland), Dr. Alain Largeteau (Center Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique, Institut de chimie de la Matière Condensée de Bordeaux, France), Prof., Dr. Gérard Demazeau (HPBioTECH Ltd, France) and Prof., Dr. Maria Tomoaia-Cotisel (Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, Department of Chemical Engineering, Romania). Within project, injectable multifunctional systems for the treatment of osteoporotic bone fractures were developed.
